President Sakellaropoulou to IX DEF: Greece participates equally in the European, regional and international developments Greece is equally participating in the European, regional and international developments, President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou said on Wednesday (Apr.10), opening the 9th Delphi Economic Forum, adding that it shares the common values that Europe embodies and actively strives for their promotion and deepening. Sakellaropoulou spoke of an international institution that has turned into a reference point for Greece and not only, noting that this year's Forum with main issue "The Great Transition" is held in an environment of intense geopolitical rearrangements and challenges, not only for Europe but for the whole world. Referring to Greece, she underlined that "as a country with an established democracy and a proven commitment to the united Europe, it plays a leading role in supporting the accession process of the Western Balkans and in upgrading the political and economic cooperation of all the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and Southeast Europe." However, she noted that "a prerequisite for this, of course, is the unwavering respect, by all countries of the region, of the principles of the rule of law, human rights, as well as good neighbourly relations and of the international law." On the geopolitical challenges not only in Europe but throughout the world, she pointed out: "The ongoing war in Ukraine, apart from a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and international law in general, it remains a serious threat for the European security and for the global stability. The European Union responded with unity, speed and determination with coordinated actions. Greece has practically supported all the common efforts providing the Ukrainian people with assistance until a comprehensive, fair and constant peace with total respect of Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity inside its internationally acknowledged borders, is reached. Our support should continue without objections and delays as it constitutes the key means of deterring the Russian aggression and revisionism." On the conflict in the Middle East she said that the "the humanitarian crisis in Gaza which is unfortunately intensifying, the turmoil in the Red Sea with its effects on international trade and shipping, and the risk of the spreading of the war with incalculable consequences remind in a dramatic way that peace should not be taken for granted." The current situation and the serious geopolitical crises underline the importance of EU's energy and strategic independence, as well as its enlargement, especially towards the Western Balkans". The Greek president also referred to the climate crisis which has already taken the dimensions of a crisis and of "state of emergency." Finally, on the protection of EU external borders, she said that it is a top priority which, however should align with our duty to protect human life, showing the necessary solidarity to the countries that are called to shoulder the main burden. "The migration issue does not only concern some countries but the entire European family, which, in close cooperation with third states, must deal with it, while remaining faithful to the ideals it advocates."
Prime Minister Mitsotakis after meeting with Gentiloni: The government is strong and remains fully committed towards its reform agenda. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met on Wednesday (Apr.10), at Maximos Mansion, with EU Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni, who is visiting Greece in order to participate in the Delphi Economic Forum. At the beginning of the meeting, the Prime Minister and Gentiloni made the following statements: Kyriakos Mitsotakis: Good to see you. It’s always a pleasure to welcome you to Athens. These are interesting times, two months before the next European elections. Looking forward to having a discussion also about the general state of the European economy. We’re happy to report that Greece is doing rather well. I think we’ve achieved something which seems to be complicated for most member states, high growth rates, but at the same time, a solid commitment to fiscal responsibility with significant primary surpluses that will continue to contribute towards reducing our debt to GDP ratio. We fully understand that in order to maintain these sustainable high growth rates, we need to focus even more on structural reforms. This has been the mandate that the government has received nine months ago. As you see, we continue full speed, regardless of the electoral cycle, to implement these reforms. For example, we’ve just tabled a very important reform, probably the most important reform ever of our judicial system in terms of better allocating our judges in order to reduce the time it takes for the justice system to issue its verdict, because we knew this was always a structural impediment towards improving both the state of our rule of law, but also our economic performance. I want you to rest assured that the government is strong and remains fully committed towards our reform agenda, which is also our reform agenda that is unlike what happened during the difficult years, it’s our own. I think it’s supported by the European institutions with which, as you know, we have an excellent level of cooperation. Paolo Gentiloni: Well, thank you very much, Prime Minister. Indeed, I’m rather optimistic also for the European economy, but the European economy entered this year in a very weak footing. We hope for the second part of the year, we will have an acceleration of the activity and maybe 2025 in a better situation. But indeed, as you said, we have to recognise that Greece has a different scenario. We have an average of growth in Europe around zero point something, and you have in Greece an average growth of two point something, which makes a difference. It is not only on figures. I think it is also how Greece is also using the European funds ‘NextGenerationEU’. This is part of the story, which is a story of increasing investments, investments also in strategic sectors like research, development, education, how Greece is increasing exports, which is also a very important message. Let me also recognise your personal role, which is very important in this moment for the future of the Union. We are, of course, in a moment of changement of the political cycle near to the elections, but having a success story to tell is very important for the future also of Europe.
