The Commemorative Seminar of Nikos Kazanzakis Was Successfully held

On November 7, 2012, the Commemorative Seminar of The Greek-Cinese Friendship Envoy and Greek writer Nikos Kazanzakis was successfully held at the Chinese embassy to Greece.

Greece's former deputy prime minister Pankaros, many former ministers and dignitaries as well as senior officials from the Greek Culture Ministry  , Education Ministry, and Foreign Affairs Ministry and other friendly people from all walks of life attended the meeting.

 

Mrs. Zhao Liying, charged 'affaires of the Chinese embassy in Greece, said in her speech that Kazanzakis is a trailblazer of friendship between the Chinese and Greek people and a good friend of the Chinese people. He visited China twice, in 1935 and 1957, and wrote his views and feelings on the great changes in the history of new and old China in Chinese records and other writings. He had a profound understanding of Chinese culture and placed great sympathy and support on the Chinese people. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Greece. It is hoped that this symposium will pay tribute to this literary giant and deepen the exchanges and friendship between the two countries and the two peoples.Mr. Li chenggui, a famous expert on Chinese Greek, former chief reporter of Xinhua news agency in Athens , and translator of the book Kazanzakis, was invited to attend the meeting and make a speech.

Nikos Kazantzakis (Greek: Νίκος Καζαντζάκης); 18 February 1883 – 26 October 1957) was a Greek writer. Widely considered a giant of modern Greek literature, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in nine different years.

Kazantzakis' novels included Zorba the Greek (published 1946 as Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas), Christ Recrucified (1948), Captain Michalis (1950, translated Freedom and Death), and The Last Temptation of Christ (1955). He also wrote plays, travel books, memoirs and philosophical essays such as The Saviors of God: Spiritual Exercises. His fame spread in the English-speaking world due to cinematic adaptations of Zorba the Greek (1964) and The Last Temptation of Christ (1988).

He translated also a number of notable works into Modern Greek, such as the Divine Comedy, Thus Spoke Zarathustra and the Iliad.
